'Through Her Eyes'
Delves into the intricate tapestry of cultural representation in my mothers narrative. Through the lens of a camera I capture her in carefully constructed portraits, set against the backdrop of natural outdoor environments. These photographs, presented as uncanny portraits, serve as a catalyst for critical conversations surrounding cultural representation.
My mother's unique perspective on culture and identity is deeply rooted in her experiences and traditions, which have played a profound role in shaping our family's cultural identity. With this project, I aim to delve into the depths of this heritage, gaining a richer understanding of the cultural fabric that she has passed down to us and how it has evolved over time. Using the power of visual storytelling, I employ photography as a medium to dissect and analyze the various elements of culture represented in each image. Traditional garments serve as a visual language, showcasing the vibrancy, symbolism, and intergenerational narratives embedded within them. These garments become more than minimal textiles; they become channels for exploring the complexities and nuances of the Thai culture represented in my family.
By capturing my mother's performances for the camera, I aim to emphasize the inherent performativity of cultural identity. Each photograph becomes a reflection of the multi-faceted layers of our heritage, simultaneously celebrating and questioning the authenticity and fluidity of cultural representation. Through this project, I aspire to spark dialogues that challenge preconceived notions and stereotypes surrounding this topic. By delving into my family's collective memory, I hope to bridge the gaps between generations, fostering a deeper appreciation for our cultural heritage and engendering a sense of pride in our shared identity. Ultimately, 'Through Her Eyes' serves as an exploration of the past, a reflection of the present, and an invitation to envision a future where representation is approached with empathy,
understanding, and respect.
